A single European energy market is the commitment of the member states of the European Union. Already key member states have realised their own free supply markets, with others moving steadily towards this goal. However the full realisation of a truly open, single energy market, allowing for cross border competition and contracts is still some way off. Market liberalisation remains a concern with challenges including transborder transmission capacity and the transparency in the network. There also remain specific national challenges to a competitive supply contract, with experience showing that the majority of consumers are further advanced in their consolidated thinking than the suppliers.
